Turbocharged is a word that gives the sense of an engine that is powerful and better than the ones available. Turbocharger engine is a pair of fans that use up the exhaust waste power from the end of the engine to fill the front of the engine for efficient of the engine. The exhaust that goes out of the car is harnessed and used for faster engine performance.
How do they Work?
In a standard engine, the flow of the air decides the efficiency of the engine. For a running engine, the motion of pistons helps in the intake of air. This air mixes with fuel and creates power. When you are accelerating, you are drawing air into the engine enough for vaporized fuel to be drawn into the engine. Turbo Lag
Turbochargers ca F-you n be used only when at rpm of 2000-3000. This generated enough exhaust pressure. The time taken for a car to reach this rpm is referred to as turbo lag. Once the car reaches this rpm, you can see the drastic change in power of the vehicle.
Where is it Used?
Turbochargers are highly potent and fuel-efficient. They were initially used in sports car for the power it has. But since many governments came up with the idea of fuel efficiency, it is now used in regular cars too. They produce more power in engines that are expected to function less efficiently. The fuel used is high-octane fuel. The mileage of your car varies with your driving habits. For example, if your foot is significant, the amount of pressure you apply on acceleration is more, and this turns the turbocharger on and uses up all your fuel. Diesel cars, when fitted with a turbocharger, works best than a combination with gasoline.
Advantages and Disadvantages
The amount of power output you get with the help of a turbocharger installed with the engine is very high. It does not matter if the engine is small; it gives more power capacity with a small engine. A turbocharger fitted engine, in theory, uses up the same amount of fuel as one without it. However, in practice, the turbocharger fitted ones are more fuel-efficient. They are 10% more fuel-efficient compared to other engines. They draw a lot of air and use it thoroughly, which reduce the overall air pollution caused by the car. These significant advantages make the turbocharger a good option for your car.
The main drawback of turbochargers is that they are not very reliable. The addition of turbocharger adds to the complexity of the vehicle and takes up time in manufacturing. One cannot say everything is thoroughly inspected, and nothing can go wrong due to this complexity. They do increase fuel efficiency, but there are better options like hybrids, diesel engines, etc.. Also, turbocharged engines are not expected to work longer. The extra addition to the engine increases the temperature and pressure on various parts which can lead to their failure. This way turbochargers contribute to the reduction of lifespan of engine components which are otherwise supposed to work for more years. The small engine is exploited by a fitting turbocharger that it affects the engine severely. The turbo lag is also a drawback of the turbocharger. There is a significant delay before the turbo kicks in, and users do not very much appreciate this lag.
Turbochargers Vs Superchargers
Even if they both sound similar, they are not the same. Superchargers are not air-driven mechanical work. It is mostly related to belts. The turbo lag can be eliminated by replacing turbocharger with a supercharger, but the power needed for this to run is much more than a turbo. Superchargers are used mostly in drag races where low-end power is needed.
