What bread is good to prevent diabetes?
People with diabetes often misunderstand bread. Many people with diabetes believe they shouldn’t eat bread. This is simply not true.
Choose a bread that is higher in:
- Plant-based fat
- Fiber
- Protein
You can also use it in combination with foods rich in fat, protein, and fiber: avocados, nut butters, eggs, etc. You can do the same thing with white bread or another bread that has less fiber. To prevent blood sugar spikes, add quality sources of protein and fiber to your bread.
Does sourdough be good for diabetes?
The minerals in sourdough bread are similar to those found in yeast-leavened loafs, and they may be better absorbed.
Carbohydrates in sourdough
Researchers have found that the fermentation that creates sourdough reduces the glycemic reaction in people with diabetes who eat the bread. The same is true for pumpernickel, which also uses a starter.
Is pumpernickel good for diabetes patients?
Pumpernickel is a dense, slightly sweet bread. It is made with rye and a sourdough starting. Breads with a starter, as mentioned above, may have a lower glycemic effect on blood sugars in people with diabetes. Pumpernickel is still a good choice for those who are diabetic, but you should consider the amount of protein and fiber.
Best low-glycemic bread
Ideal bread for people with diabetes type 1 or 2 should be low-glycemic, contain plant-based fats, 2g of fiber and some protein. It should also taste great and have a nice texture. - Oroweat 100 Whole Wheat : Oroweat is a delicious whole wheat sandwich loaf that contains 4g of protein and 2g of fiber per slice.
- Pepperidge Farm Oatmeal Whole Grain Bread : This version from Pepperidge Farm offers a slightly different taste profile due to the oatmeal. It also has slightly more protein, at 5g/slice.
Best gluten-free breads for diabetics
If made with refined flours such as rice or potato, gluten free breads can have a higher glycemic index. But there are plenty of gluten-free whole grain choices out there here are some of my favorites…

Grain-free breads are a great option for diabetics and shouldn’t be overlooked in a discussion about the best bread for Diabetes. Grain-free breads are higher in fat, protein and carbohydrate than traditional breads.
Simple Mills Artisan bread mix: I love the Simple Mills Artisan bread mix if you want to bake your own bread. It is higher in protein, lower in carbohydrates and delicious than other bread mix! It’s great for making homemade focaccia!
Best bagels for diabetes
Bagels have more carbs than bread. However, you can still enjoy them if you are diabetic. Choose varieties that are high in fiber and protein, such as the ones listed below. Pair it with another source of protein.

- Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Hot Dog buns : As we mentioned earlier when discussing sandwich breads Ezekiel Bread can be found in the freezer section. Hot dog buns from Ezekiel are great for diabetics.
Low carb bread alternatives
These bread alternatives are also suitable for people with diabetes. I love using crunchy iceberg lettuce instead of a hamburger bun. The combination of hot and cold tastes is so delicious! You can also eat the traditional bread if you prefer it.
