If you have ever had to deal with squeaking floors, you know how frustrating they can be. Particularly if you are trying to get a late-night snack.

While creaking floors and creaking staircases are more common in older houses, they aren’t uncommon in newer ones. A high-pitched, squeaky sound can be caused by flooring in any home.

To fix the problem, you can use a squeaking flooring repair kit with a drill.

The most common sound is caused by loose wood planks. Carpeted rooms can be noisy if the plywood flooring has not been properly connected to the joists. Here are some ways to fix squeaky flooring under carpet. These solutions are easy to use, cost-effective, and quick.

How to Fix a Squeaky Floor Under Carpet?

Method 1 – Place Shims in Any Openings

Squeaky floors that make squeaky sounds are easier to fix when you have access to the crawl space or basement.

1. Be careful when walking on the uneven floor.

2. If you hear a noise coming from a particular location, keep your ears open.

3. Once you have determined the exact area of the squeak, you can use a flashlight to check for an opening between floor and floor. To remove the carpet from its corners, you will need to lift it.

4. To get a better view, you might need to remove insulation.

5. Apply wood glue to a thin piece, and then push it into any hole.

6. Do not lift the subfloor.

7. The shim prevents the floor from moving in between the gaps. This usually results in noise reduction.

8. You should inspect each noisy spot on both sides. Sometimes, the gap may only be visible on one side.

9. Once the adhesive has dried completely, you can use a knife to cut any excess shims. Then snap them off until they are flush with joists.

10. To trim a shim too large to be snapped or scored, you can use an oscillating multitool with a wood cutting knife to make it.

Method 2 – Use Construction Adhesive to Fill Large Gaps

The little wood piece can be used to quieten the squeak as long as it comes from the exact position where the wood-shim was placed.

If there is a large gap between the floor joints, you don’t need any shims. To fill in long cracks, fractures and fissures, you can use fast-setting glue instead.

1. This area, between the floor and seam, can be applied with a caulking gun.

2. Check that there are no gaps between the sides.

3. Any gaps may be filled with adhesive.

4. The glue will cure and the floor will stop shifting. This will also likely eliminate creaking sounds.

Method 3 – Nail a Board to an Joist

When floor joists have been installed in moist conditions, they are more susceptible to bowing or bending. It can also be affected by temperature and humidity changes. It is important to keep the humidity under control and have adequate ventilation in your home.

You will need to move the subfloor or flooring up and down to create a squeaking sound.

1. To repair the problem joist, place an extended wooden 2×4 near it. Apply an adhesive uni-directionally to the top.

2. Push the 2×4 onto the joist, and then slide it into a tight place against the subfloor. To ensure they are securely attached to the subfloor, hammer the top edges of the 2x4s often.

3. Secure the 2×4 to your joist using 3-inch screws not more than 8 inches apart.
