Breakfast in a bag for camping
This recipe is an excellent place to begin. It’s easy to customize this recipe for your family. This easy recipe is quick and simple to make. All you need are some fresh ingredients and a frying pan. Try it on your next camping adventure.
Each bag of breakfast can serve one person. It can be stored in plastic bags or mason jars to be used later on when camping.
Ingredients
- Large eggs
- Cheddar cheese, shredded
- Summer sausage, diced
- White mushrooms diced
- Green onion stalk diced
Directions
1. Combine eggs, cheddar, sausage, mushroom and onion in a medium-sized bowl.
2. On the camp stove, or on an open fire, heat olive oil in a cast-iron skillet.
3. Pour the egg mixture in the skillet, and cook at medium heat for 8-10 minutes stirring constantly.

- Summer sausage can be substituted with breakfast sausage, broken up into small pieces.
- You can use any omelet ingredients that you like!
Cooking in alternative ways
- In boiling water, you can cook multiple individual bag omelets simultaneously. Set up an omelet station where everyone can choose their own ingredients. This cooking method requires a large pot and freezer bags or silicone bag.
- Foil packs are also available. Use a disposable cake or pie pan that is covered in aluminium foil.
Camping breakfast ideas
- Try a breakfast burger cooked over a campfire. Fill your burgers with a fried sausage or egg. English muffins and sweet Hawaiian rolls are a great alternative to a standard burger bun.
- Breakfast sandwiches that can be made ahead are also delicious.
- French toast with fresh fruit. Don’t forget to add maple syrup!
- The overnight oats are a great camping breakfast. You can prepare them before leaving home and eat them cold to save time. Add brown sugar to the dish for an extra sweet touch.
- Cinnamon Rolls is another of my favorite things to make for a delicious morning meal. The flavour is enhanced by baking them in an orange peel.
- Pancakes made from banana bread make a great breakfast. Spread some peanut butter on top for a classic combination of flavours. Combine all dry ingredients in a Ziploc or plastic container and take it with you. You can write down the instructions on the bag so that you don’t miss anything. The prep time is also reduced by using pancake mix.
- Breakfast burritos. Wrap your egg mixture in a tortilla after preparing Breakfast in a bag.

Cast iron cooking tips
- If you are using cast iron for cooking, make sure that you season it first.
- Use oven mitts or gloves when cooking, as the surface will be very hot.
- Open flames are not the best way to cook your recipe. Instead, use hot coals. If you use a fire too hot, it will only burn the outside and not cook your recipe.
- Before storing, scrub the cast iron using a vegetable scrubber. Rinse and dry it thoroughly.
