How to remove Honeywell thermostat?

Basic Thermostat Wiring

Low-voltage wires are used to power the furnace circuit. These wires are connected to various parts of your HVAC system and must be correctly connected when installing your thermostat.

Thermostat wiring can be colour coded according to industry standards.

• White: Heating System.
• Yellow: Compressor.
• Green: Fan.
• Orange: Heat Pump (if you own one)

The cooling system requires a 24 VAC transformer:

• Red (H), 24VAC transformer for heating system.
• Blue: Common wire or “C” wire.

How to prepare for the thermostat removal?

Remove the Honeywell Thermostat cover

To expose the bracket and wiring, the visible part of the Honeywell thermostat must be removed from the wall. Most models can be pulled straight from the wall. You should pull the thermostat away from the wall with a firm grip, taking care not to pull the base off of the wall. You might find a button on some thermostats that allows you to open the cover.

How to mark the thermostat wires?

To get your thermostat to work properly, you must correctly connect the wires. To make the wiring step easier, take a picture of the entire wiring system. Place a piece of painters’ tape on each wire, marking the terminal it connects. You will have a guide to help you connect the wires when you install the new thermostat.

Remove the Bracket and Wires

You will need to disconnect the wires carefully before you can remove the thermostat. These wires are often held in place with a screw. To remove them, you will need a screwdriver. Some use push-in terminals that have a release button. These can be engaged with a small screwdriver or ballpoint pen. You should not pull the labels from the wires.

Remove any wall plates that are still attached to the wall. Your new thermostat will be shipped with its own bracket. Repair any damage to the wall such as removing anchors, patching holes and painting, especially if the new thermostat is different in size.
