Cleaning the house is not everyone’s forte and the idea of fun. However, if you have got to do it, you can do it properly. Cleaning is the primary key to keeping a tidy and healthy home. If you improperly clean the house, it can lead to a lot of frustration, waste of time, and also create the need for replacements. Even though a lot of people might take cleaning lightly, some of the home cleaning blunders can create more damage than good to your home. Knowing these mistakes can help you in avoiding them and save both your time and money. Here are some of the common home cleaning mistakes one can make and the solutions to prevent them:

  • Scrubbing carpet spills: If you happen to drop or spill coffee or red wine on your carpet floor, do not rush to scrub off the stain. Rubbing untwisted carpet fibres creates distortions in a pile, and the damage becomes permanent once done. Even though you might be able to take the strain away from the carpet, the fibres will remain twisted. Instead of scrubbing, you can blot the spill with a paper towel until it dries and then treat the mat with a stain remover.
  • Too much water: Never use too much water on fabrics. Some of the materials can be damaged by water or won’t dry out properly. Also, avoid applying water to metal components as it may result in rust.
  • Dusting with a dry rag: By using a dry rag, you will just be moving dirt and dust around the scratch surfaces. Instead, you can use a soft duster or a microfiber cloth which can be your best bet as it grabs and holds onto the particles. This can result in cleaner surfaces.
  • Combining cleaning products: Combining cleaning products can cause a lot of damage as these products are primarily ammonia, bleach, or detergent. They can damage the surfaces like carpets and laminates and also create fumes which are harmful to your health.
  • Vacuuming first: This is a prevalent mistake made by people. Vacuuming before cleaning the surfaces will probably mean that you will have to vacuum again after you knock out the dust and dirt on the floor. Always remember to dust and wipe all the surfaces before vacuuming.
  • Cleaning windows on a sunny day: Even though it is tempting to clean windows on a day when the sun is at its best, it is always better to leave the windows for cleaning on a cloudy day. This is mainly because the heat from the sun will dry the liquid more quickly, leaving smears on the window. It is also necessary to use proper window cleaning supplies as using a cloth, or a brush might even end up in giving lies to the windows.
  • Forgetting to clean your vacuum: If you do not clean your vacuum cleaner, there is a possibility that you might end up pushing the dirt around your floors instead of sucking it up. Always remember to replace the vacuum bags once they are filled up to one-third of the actual capacity and empty the bag as soon as possible.
  • Using polish every time, you dust: Modern furniture has a protective coating and does not always need polish as you clean every time. You can sometimes use an ordinary lightly damped microfibre cloth to dust. If you are using a polish, use the same product every time you clean to help avoid the build-up of residue.
  • Spraying surfaces directly: When you spray furniture directly, it can create a build-up which is very tough to remove and also attract more dust at the same time. To avoid this, you can spray with a cloth rather than directly applying it on the surface.
