No one could ever call our newest actual homeowner boring! Tash, from The Colour Tribe, is chatting about her colorful ’80s brick house.
Tash shows that even homes in their original state can be stunning if treated with originality and creativity.
Tash, who loves color and all things the ’80s, and their husband knew that this was the home for them.
“I live with my husband Anthony, my two sons Tom (8 years old) and Harvey (4 years old), in this original brick home from the 1980s.
Tash smiles, “It was obvious from the moment we entered that this house was built to last!”
“Many of the fixtures and fittings looked as if they were brand new. Who likes to avoid going back in time and enjoying the ’80s?
Every time a client or friend walks into my house, they say, “This reminds me so much of my aunty’s childhood home!”
Tash wanted to add her touch to this solid, 4-bedroom, 2-story home.
She says, “I want to keep the home’s originality.”
When we bought the house, there needed to be more inspiration for how to decorate a brown-brick home. The magazine featured beautiful white walls.
“I went off the rails and decorated it with colors, patterns, and textures that clashed, and I truly embraced 80s joy.
We felt the walk-in closet was a blank slate on which we could stamp our style. We hired Kaboodle Kitchens via Bunnings to install a new pantry in the vibrant color basil. This is a nod towards the retro feel of our house.
We were curious about Tash’s bold style, with such bright colors splashed all over her home.
“It’s true; the brown brick looks oppressive when not painted! I wanted to make the most of my children’s wonder and joy using a more vibrant palette.
“I don’t think my wife or boys care – they let me be myself. They probably wouldn’t have chosen to be so colorful if they had the choice!
“Yet, home decorating isn’t their passion. It’s mine.” Tash laughs and says, “I’m so grateful they let me faff about the house.”
Tash’s brick house in the ’80s is full of inspiration and a lot to look at.
“I love mixing vintage furniture with contemporary homewares. I’m a girly girl.” Tash describes her style as “vintage contemporary.”
“I love that I often walk by our walk-in closet, making me double-take. It’s more like an art gallery than a kitchen!
My retro yellow kitchen is usually an underrated space. Who would choose bright yellow tiles today? This kitchen is fantastic!
Another favorite is our family area, with its soaring ceilings. The sunken lounge with a fireplace is my husband’s favorite room.
Tash has a unique style that is to be admired. She has an Instagram following of more than 100K followers, and we asked her if she would share some of her styling tips with us.
“It is my greatest accomplishment since I started The Colour Tribe on Instagram to have this brown brick house featured in Origin Magazine!” I would have never thought my house would be featured in Origin Magazine!
It’s been a wonderful experience, and I am grateful.
Art is the key
“Invest in a large print or painting to be the centerpiece of your home. The scale is essential; many people will look at a wall and go small. Go large!
“Spend an extra year to get the perfect size painting. When investing in art, ensure it is hung correctly and at the correct height.
I see so many paintings hung too low or high; they feel wrong. Paying a professional is worth it.
Less is More
You don’t need to cover a table with nik-naks just because there is a space in your house. “If you can, replace the table with plants.”
The key to a happy house is storage.
I have two kids, which means that we have a lot of stuff. The family room is the hub of our home, but I hate looking at their property.
Ikea drawers look like cool TV cabinets, but they hide ALL their toys. You would never know that our family room is crammed with toys!
