Once the excitement and blur of the wedding day and honeymoon have passed by, real married life begins. This means plenty of memory-making, fun firsts, and teamwork as a couple. It also means ensuring the practical aspects of marriage are taken care of so you can create a strong foundation for your future together.

To help you start your marriage life strong, take a look at these five things all newlyweds should take care of after the honeymoon:

1. Insurance, Insurance, Insurance

Insurance is an essential service for families, offering cover and protection in the event something goes wrong. You likely already have dental cover, medical cover, and other types of insurance as singletons, but do you have joint policies? You can get some great deals on insurance as a married couple, so it’s worth doing a little research, especially with life cover and any policies relating to items you jointly own or have rights to in the eyes of the law.

2. Send Out Thanks

It is so important to send the relevant thank-yous out to everybody who helped with your wedding and sent gifts. Some examples of those who should receive a thank you note include:

  • Everybody who sent a card or gift
  • Friends and family who helped you plan the wedding
  • Wedding venues and services who gave you incredible service
  • Honeymoon venues and staff who impressed you

It may seem like overkill to send thanks, but it is meaningful to everyone who helped and to those who sent you cards and gifts. You might even want to make special thank you cards that showcase photos of the big day

3. Get Your Marriage License

In order to change your surname – like 70% of women in America still choose to do after marriage – and complete other legal post-marriage tasks, you need your marriage license. Your wedding officiant should have filed the paperwork. However, you may have to wait a few weeks for the license to come through. If there seems to be a delay, chase up the paperwork so you can get that all-important name change completed.

4. Let Your Employer Know

It is so important to let your employer know about your marriage as it may impact how any insurance you have with the company works. It can also affect your taxes, which is worth looking into as there are some tax laws related to marriage that will impact you now you have tied the knot. At the very least, your employer should definitely know who your next of kin is so they can have their contact details on record.

5. Sort Out All The Stuff

Post-wedding, you will have a ton of stuff that you need to physically sort out. Gifts, cards, the dress, the bouquet – you’ve got a lot of organizing and preserving to do. Sorting it out now means you can send back gifts you do not want or need in good time. It also means jobs like freezing the cake can be done whilst it’s still in the best condition.

“If I get married, I want to be very married.” – Audrey Hepburn

Although the period after getting home from your honeymoon can feel like a little bit of a comedown, the joys of married life will soon bring the excitement back. Focus on the practical tasks, like those above, and everything else will fall into place so you can start making memories to last a lifetime.
