The Chevy Cruze’s dashboard will display a message saying, “Engine power has been reduced.”
This problem was reported by two Chevrolet Cruzes that came into my workshop. This article will discuss the causes and possible solutions to a Chevy Cruze’s engine power reduction. Let’s begin.
What Does Reduced Engine Power Mean on a Chevrolet Cruze
The message “engine power reduced” on your Chevy Cruze indicates that the ECU has detected a problem in the vehicle and is limiting the engine’s power to prevent further engine damage.
It is most likely caused by a bad accelerator pedal sensor or throttle body.
What causes the “Engine Power Reduced” fault on a Chevy Cruze?
After working on several Chevy Cruzes, I’ve narrowed it down to just a couple of main causes.
Faulty Accelerator Sensor
A faulty sensor on the accelerator pedal is usually to blame for a Chevy Cruze’s “engine power reduction.” This sensor is located on the pedal.
The electronic throttle control system in my car is dependent on the accelerator pedal sensor. It measures how hard I press the gas pedal and then sends signals to my car’s computer.
The computer in your car can then calculate the exact amount of fuel it needs to give the engine to meet your demands.
You may notice a reduced engine power message, reduced fuel efficiency, and inconsistent engine responses if the sensor for your accelerator pedal is defective.
Faulty Throttle Body
Another common reason for “engine power reduction” in a Chevy Cruze is the throttle body. The throttle body is a key component of the engine’s intake system.
The housing is tube-shaped and contains a butterfly-shaped flat valve that can be rotated to regulate the amount of air going into the engine.
The throttle body in traditional gasoline spark-ignition engines controls the airflow based on input from the driver through the gas pedal.
Other Causes
After mentioning the two main causes of an “Engine Power is Reduced” message appearing on the dashboard of a Chevy, I am confident that 90%-95% of the time, it is caused by one of these things.
There are other causes of this problem.
Bad Battery
The throttle can malfunction if your Cruze’s electronics are damaged.
It is possible that the battery will not charge properly and not be able to send enough current to your engine control unit (ECU) or other electronic components in your vehicle. The engine would lose power.
Clogged DPF (Diesel Engines):
The Diesel Particulate filter can become clogged by soot and other particles produced by the Chevy Cruze Diesel engine over time. Your Cruze may run poorly, and you might get the “Engine power is reduced” message.
How to fix a Cruze with reduced engine power?
You should first get an OBD2 scan tool and scan your vehicle. This will help you to identify the exact problem.
The brake pedal sensor needs to be changed if you receive the P2138/2128 code. You will need to replace the throttle body if you receive any codes related to the throttle.
You can bring your car to any dealer or mechanic if you do not have an obd2 scanner. You’ll know if there are any codes related to brake pedal sensors or throttle.
