Recognition of the traffic sign (TSR) is a cutting-edge technology that warns and even commands drivers to perform specific actions. The automatic recognition of traffic signs improves safety and the driver’s convenience and ease of use. First-generation TSR systems, introduced in the latter half of 2008, were created in collaboration with Continental AG and Mobileye.

The systems can recognize European speed limits only. The second-generation system can detect speed limits for overtaking also. This technology is used in car models like Volkswagen Phaeton and Volvo V40, V60, V70, S6, X80, and XC60 for road sign information. Although we don’t have any TSR-equipped vehicles in India, a few new premium vehicles are equipped with intelligent driving assistance technology.

The systems for recognizing traffic signs were developed in two distinct phases. The first is detecting traffic signs in images or videos using image processing. The second one is identifying identified symptoms, which usually involve the significant performance of an artificial neural network. However, recognizing and interpreting traffic signs and their meanings in various viewing situations is an obstacle.

The system can recognize and display traffic signs and symbols on the instrument panel. It also flashes when the car is over speeds that are allowed. The TSR system has a front-facing camera mounted behind the rearview mirror. It can detect traffic signs that are coming and display the characters on the display. Utilizing the camera-based detector, the system will analyze the data against the information gathered via the digital map that is is part of the car’s navigation system and traffic services.

TRS reduces the danger of prosecution and encourages the pursuit of the legal speed limit, observing traffic regulations, and driving safely. By using only vision-based information, the TSR system can recognize and interpret the meaning of both traffic signs that are fixed and the meanings of LED signs as well as variable ones. But, signs covered by vehicles, trees, or any other obstruction may not be recognized by the computer. Cars such as BMW 7-Series (model year 2008), BMW 5- Series, BMW 1- Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class come with this system in various global markets; however, they are not available in India. These features are only feasible and sensible if we have the proper infrastructure for these cars in India.
