What is Hamptons Style?
Bondi to Sydneysiders is the Hamptons for New Yorkers. Noosa is the Queenslanders’ answer. Brighton is the name of the place for Victorians. It is a posh, expensive area, and it’s by the sea.
Hamptons style is about more than just crisp whites. It also includes breezy blues with timber accents. Natural fibers are used in the interiors. Imagine coastal dreams with luxury and sophistication. Unsurprisingly, it is one of the most popular designs around.
Hamptons Style Home Building Tips
It takes work to achieve your design vision when building a home. A suitable materials palette is crucial to the success of your project. Some of our favorite interior designers were asked how they would tackle the exterior of Hamptons-style homes.
External Materials
Catherine Heraghty, Stables, says that a classic Hamptons-style home will have an exterior with a horizontally clad surface.
We recommend horizontal weatherboard cladding. James Hardy is a great range that we often use. You can achieve the Hamptons look by adding sandstone to your exterior.
Michelle Hart, Bask Interiors, suggests that you consider the location of your home to make sure your exterior can handle it.
She says that conventional weatherboards are suitable for homes located in urban areas.
“However, if you live near the sea, you will want something more durable and long-lasting such as Scyon linea.” For your roof, colorbond steel is an excellent option for a modern appearance that suits Australian weather conditions.”
Paint choices — Outside
Interior designer, Gabrielle Reinhardt of Berkeley Interiors, says: “I love light grey weatherboards paired with white and black trims for a Hamptons-inspired exterior color scheme.”
Allira Bell, stylist for Temple & Webster, says that the choice of paint can depend on where you live. Dark charcoal is the best choice for contemporary urban streetscapes. She says that if you live in a traditional neighborhood, exterior paints in lighter shades of blue will blend well.
Catherine agrees that keeping things simple will help you achieve the Hamptons style. She says that she recommends maintaining neutral items for the exterior and focusing on whites, greys, and other neutral colors.
Choose your color — inside.
The Hamptons style is an excellent choice for inside and outside your home.
Catherine says: “To me, a Hamptons color palette is calm, warm, and simple.” It is based on neutrals, cream whites, and muted greys.
Gabrielle suggests that starting with white is a great place to begin.
She says she likes to paint her walls white with greys, greens, or light blues accents.
Regarding a place like your kitchen, I love navy cabinetry with a white wall and marble benchtops. It gives that classic Hamptons feel. I love using cool greys and a little light blue.
Floor
Flooring is one of the most important (and expensive) decisions when building a Hamptons-style home or any home. You want to get it right.
Wood
Catherine says, “Timber flooring is a hallmark element of a Hamptons-style home, whether it’s real timber or engineered floor.”
Melanie Tomlinson, Melanie Tomlinson Designs, also loves wood floors and suggests using a herringbone design to give the room that authentic Hamptons feeling.
Reclaimed or engineered oak longboards make a great choice. The Euroak and Havwoods ranges are astounding. She says that she loves the herringbone hardwood floors.
It also depends on the ‘level’ you want to achieve in Hamptons style. We suggest straight boards in a lighter finish for a pared-back contemporary style.
Gabrielle chooses the solid French Oak floors and parquet from Wildwood Flooring.
Michelle recommends looking for floorboards with a gray undertone. She also agrees that chevron or herringbone adds a touch of Hamptons flair.
Layer floorboards with jute or Sisal rugs in the living and dining areas.
Stone and tile
You can keep the Hamptons look by using natural stone.
Large format natural stone in a herringbone pattern or French laid is ideal for floors. You could choose a marble or natural stone pattern, suggests Melanie.
Eco Outdoors also offers Garonne and Limestone Chalford, which are both timeless and fabulous. These products can be used indoors or outdoors with matching finishing levels.
Carpets and rugs
A carpet or a textured carpet is the obvious choice if you want something warm and soft.
Catherine says that “high-quality carpeting with neutral or stone colors will set the tone of your interior space. Layer it with luxurious, beautiful rugs to add texture.”
