It can be daunting to jump in on a halfpipe, but you can master the technique and move up to bigger skateboard ramp by practicing.

What is Dropping in?

A drop-in in skateboarding is when you go from a flat platform to a steep transition. It starts at the edge of a bowl or ramp, with the tail of your board resting on the curb.

How to Get in on a Skateboard

These tips are the best for frontside drop-ins.

  1. Get into position. Position your board so that the wheels extend over the drop’s edge. Support the board with your back foot by supporting it with weight.
  2. Drop in. Start the drop by putting your front foot on the board. Then, lean in and commit fully.
  3. Change your body weight. Your front wheels will hit the wall. As soon as your front wheels touch the wall, spread your lower and higher body weight equally across your board. If you place your weight on your back foot, you’ll fall backward.

Here are 4 tips to help you learn how to drop in safely

Skateboarders learning new tricks can run into danger. Make sure you take all precautions.

  1. Use a helmet and pads. You will fall or trip if you are a beginner skateboarder. Make sure you have the proper pads to stop your fall, including elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet.
  2. Follow and read the official rules. Each skate park will have its own set of rules that ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone. Check them out before you go to a new skate park.
  3. Observe before joining in. To avoid collisions, park skaters take turns skating. This is particularly important in busy parks. You can observe how other skaters move so that you can follow the flow and order. Then claim your spot and start your turn.
  4. Get started small. Begin by dropping down into small ramps before you jump into a pool or halfpipe. Gradually increase your skill level by slowly increasing the size of the vert ramps.
