The “Service StabiliTrak,” a problem that I have personally seen on many Buicks, can occur at any time. There is no obvious reason why the light will come on. In some cases, the traction control light may follow.
This article will describe what this warning means and how it can be fixed. Let’s move on.
What is the Stabilitrak System in a Buick vehicle?
Let’s first take a closer look at the StabiliTrak fault system and its workings.
StabiliTrak, or advanced safety technology, is designed to improve the control and stability of the vehicle.
The system uses a network that continuously monitors the position of the steering, the tires, and the direction your Buick is moving.
The system will correct any deviations by either adjusting power steering or applying torque to the engine in order to keep the vehicle moving on its intended path.
It also helps the driver maintain the steering wheel straight when braking. This can prevent skids and over-correction.
What causes “Service Stabilitrak?” on a Buick
This warning can be caused by a number of things, but the most common is one of two problems. Here are some of the most common causes for “Service StabiliTrak.”
Wheel Bearings (Hubs) that are Bad
The most common problem caused by a bad wheel bearing is that your car will shake, vibrate, or pull as you drive. The traction control and “service stabiltrak” lights can come on as a result of this shaking.
The hub bearing may also show other signs.
- Humming Sound When Accelerating
- Grinding Noise When Turning
- Buick pulls one side
- Wheel speed sensors that are dirty or worn out
Damaged or dirty front-wheel speed sensors are another common cause of a Service Stabiltrak Fault message on a Buick.
The wheel speed sensors detect the rotational speeds of each wheel. These sensors send the information to your ABS module, which helps control your vehicle’s traction when driving on slippery surfaces.
They will be damaged or dirty if they cannot send accurate signals. This can lead to problems with the traction control system, and a fault code will appear.
Faulty brake pedal position sensor:
The brake pedal position sensor sends information about the position of the brake pedal to both the ABS module as well as the brake light switch.
It can then determine if you have applied pressure and how much. Stabilitrak will not function correctly if this sensor is defective.
These are inexpensive and easily replaceable. You can buy one anywhere from $20 to $40 each.
Poor Wheel Alignment
Most car owners overlook wheel alignment, but it is a crucial factor in stabilizing your vehicle. Your Buick may display a message saying “service StabiliTrak” if your wheels are not aligned.
One client replaced every suspension component imaginably, but still, his Stabilitrak Light would not go off. Check for the worn control arm.
The wheels appeared to be out of alignment on both sides by an inch. The message started immediately after the alignment of the vehicle.
Faulty MAF sensor/Bad Spark Plugs
Often, the “Service Stabilitrak Fault” message is caused by something unrelated to the system of stability control (very common in GM vehicles).
First, check the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF). It needs to be changed if it is faulty or if there’s an error code. Bad spark plugs can also cause this problem.
You should check the MAF and plugs if you are absolutely certain that you have a good suspension and wheel alignment.
How to Fix a Buick Service Stabilitrak Error?
You should look into the most common reasons that I have mentioned. If none of these are the cause, you’ll need to bring your car to a Buick dealer or a qualified auto repair shop.
