How to vent a bathroom fan through the wall?

If you have the right tools, routing a bath vent through exterior walls is easy. Some vent kits include an exterior cover and a flexible vent.

Venting a bathroom fan through the wall

Use a hole saw or drill bit to vent a bathroom fan from an exterior wall.

It will be easier to cut the hole if your exterior siding is made of vinyl or fiber cement. It may be more difficult to cut a hole in brick exteriors. However, you can use a diamond hole saw made for this purpose.

After drilling the vent hole, install an exterior bath vent cap. This cover is usually louvered to keep in the outdoor air and protect animals.

Venting a bathroom fan through an inner wall would not be possible if there is an unfinished area behind it. Outdoor venting is only possible if you have access to an exterior wall. To keep the bathroom vent hose straight, it would be necessary to attach ties or clamps every few feet to the ceiling joists.

Step 1 – Decide which hole saw drill bit to use

To cut exterior brick or siding, the main cutting tool is a 3-4″ hole drill bit.

A hole saw bit should be 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch larger than the bathroom vent hose. This will make it much easier to pass your vent hose (the stiff section) through the wall.

If you have a brick exterior, I would buy a diamond hole drill bit to be able to cut through brick.

You may also want to consider a corded drill if your drill is battery-powered.

Step 2 – Use a long drill bit to cut a guide hole

To cut through the wall completely, I recommend that you use a long drill bit. This will serve as a guide to the actual hole saw. Make sure the long drill bit is the same size as your pilot bit.

This guide hole should be cut first. Then, you can insert your pilot bit (a part of the hole saw) into the existing hole to guide the hole saw for a level cut on both sides.

Step 3 – Don’t cut all the way through at once

You should also avoid cutting through the wall completely with the hole saw.

Cut about halfway and finish the cut on your other side. You shouldn’t try to cut through the wall completely with the hole saw. The wall will flake and be damaged when it comes out at the other end.

It is crucial to drill through the wall using a long drill bit.

Step 4 – Install an Exterior Wall Hood Venting System

An exterior wall hood kit is a complete set of parts that allows you to vent the bath fan outside. These parts usually include:

  • flexible vent hose
  • Exterior vent hood with louvers
  • Adapter for rigid metal pipes
  • Clamps
  • Birdcage

The small adapter for rigid metal piping goes through the exterior wall. The flexible vent Hose attaches to the rigid piping. The small adapter for metal pipes connects to an exterior vent hood. It is not advisable to install flex vents through exterior walls.
