Our outdoor sets are equipped with weatherproof cushions. These cushions resist dampness and don’t fade when exposed to sunlight. The cushions are designed to last but you may need to replace them for various reasons. Our cushions are actually made up of two parts, the inserts and covers. You may require one or both at some point. This guide will tell you everything you need to replace cushions or covers on outdoor furniture.

Why you should replace your cushions or covers

If you want to change the color scheme of your outdoor furniture, it’s time to replace cushions. The cushions may be in good condition, but your tastes may have changed. Picking out cushion covers will help you update your outdoor living space and introduce new colors. This allows you to update your outdoor living spaces without spending money on new furniture or cushions. Choose a color from the cushions that are designed for your furniture set and choose one that matches your new design. You may decide to return to your old color scheme in the future. They are in disrepair. Cushions were designed to be used outdoors and are unlikely to fall apart because of the weather. Extreme weather conditions can cause damage to your cushions. Store them away from extreme weather conditions. This includes the winter. You may need to replace cushions or covers if you forgot to store them in a storm or during the cold months. Covers are the best option if only the fabric has worn out. If the foam is out-of-shape, however, you should consider a new insert.

Think About Your Furniture Material

Patio furniture is available in many different styles and materials. You may need to consider the material of your furniture when choosing your set.

Wood: To maintain the best appearance of your wood furniture, ensure that your outdoor replacement cushion or cushion cover is either waterproof or resistant to water. Remember that waterproof cushions (which will not absorb water) are different from water-resistant cushions (which will shed some water, but can still absorb water when wet). Select the option which best suits how much water or rain your cushions will be exposed to.

Wicker: Contrary to the way the term is used, wicker actually is not a fabric, but a pattern. Rattan, a popular material for weaving wicker, is used. Wicker furniture is often made up of only seat cushions, without a seat back. Follow the below measuring guidelines if you want to add a cushioned seat back for added comfort.

Metal: Outdoor furniture made from metal is attractive for its durability and sleek design. Cushions may slide more easily on metal furniture. It may be easier to keep in place cushions or covers with ties or that are snugly fitted. This tutorial will show you how to add ties on your covers or cushions.

Furniture made of plastic: Although less expensive than other materials in terms of price, you may sacrifice comfort. Cushions can add style and comfort to a room. Cushions can slip or blow off, so ensure they are well-fitted or have ties.

Choose Cushion Type and Style

Custom cushions, whether made for your patio furniture or to your specifications, often fit and look better. You may only need to replace the covers of your outdoor furniture if the outer fabric has faded or worn, but the cushion core is still in good condition. These are the most common types of cushion seats:

Single seat : This is the cushion you will sit on. It can be square, round, iron, curved or wicker.

Hinged chair: Seat and back are attached in a single hinged cushion. These cushions can be used for chairs that require padding on both the seat and back. Most hinged chairs feature high backs.

Bench Cushions: Bench cushion covers are used on sofas and loveseats. The larger furniture such as sofas and sectionals can be used to seat large groups in comfort.

Hinged Chair: Chaises are chaise lounges with a reclined back and a long seat. Cushions of this type feature a larger seat and a hinge seam where the seat meets back.

Five of the most common shapes for cushions are rectangular, square, contoured and trapezoid. The box-edge cushion style has a thicker edge and piping. Bullnose cushions are rounded and offer a casual look. They also tend to be cheaper. When looking for patio cushions, you should also consider whether they are meant to be used with deep-seated furniture or high-back chairs, as these are not standard dimensions. Deep seating is usually characterized by a deeper seat and can be more comfortable for taller individuals. High-back furniture has taller backs to provide more support. Special cushions will be required for these special designs.

Select the Right Fabric

It is important to choose the right fabric when replacing cushions or covers. It should look good and feel nice, but also be durable and long-lasting. Look for fabrics that are both water-resistant or resistant to fading, as well as waterproof. You don’t need your cushions to start fading after two summers or encourage the growth of mildew and mold. These are the most popular fabrics for outdoor cushions.

Sunbrella : This light, durable fabric is resistant against fading, mildew, and mold. Highly breathable, it is also waterproof.

Canvas: Canvas fabric is heavy-duty, plain-woven. The fabric is dyeable, so you can find it in many different colors and patterns. Cotton canvas can have a water-resistant finish, but it is not recommended for use near water without this.

Textilene : Often used for sun canopies, sling seating and other sling products, Textilene resists moisture, fading and mold. This fabric is not water-resistant, but it does heat up in the sun.

Olefin fiber: Also known as polypropylene. This fabric is resistant to fading, mildew, and mold.

Vinyl: Vinyl can be easily cleaned and maintained, but it can get hot when exposed to direct sunlight. Children should not use this product.

Polyester : Polyester is a cost-effective fabric that resists UV rays and mildew.

RST Brands provides free samples of fabric prior to purchase because we know that it is sometimes best to see and feel the options.

How to Measure Replacement Cushions and Covers

You want to make sure that the cushions and covers you choose are the right size. This is true whether you need to replace them because they’ve worn out, update your furniture or add some color. Here are some quick measurements to help you get the perfect patio cushions for your outdoor area. You can either use the existing cushions or furniture to measure, depending on where you order your replacements. You can measure both if you’re not sure which one is best. 2) You’ll need a tape measure, a pencil and some paper. It is easier to use a rigid tape measure than a flexible one. When using a tape measure, position the hook to grab one side of the measurement area. You can lock the measuring tape in place by pulling it across the area and locking it. This way, you won’t need to worry about the tape retracting before you are ready. If you need to round a number, round it up. Cushions or covers are often available in sizes that round up to the nearest half inch. Cushions with a larger size will be more comfortable. When measuring cushions, place them flat and dry. You’ll measure the width, height (the seat cushion thickness), and depth. Measure the cushion from one seam to another.

    • Measure the width of the cushion from the right to the left, in three areas: the front, the middle and the back. If the cushion is worn out and out-of-shape, use the largest measurement.
    • Measure the cushion from the bottom to the top. It’s up to you whether or not you want a cushion for your outdoor furniture that is more cushy.
    • Measure the depth of a cushion from top to bottom (for back cushions) and back-to front (for seat cushions).

You will also need to know the width, height and depth of your furniture.

    • Measure the width of the seat (left to right) in three places: the front edge, between the arms and at the back. Use the largest measurement.
    • Height also refers here to the thickness of a cushion. If you’re unsure of how plush the cushion should be, place the measuring tape against the back or seat to determine how high it will extend.
    • To measure the length and depth of the seating area, you only need to take one measurement: Measure in the middle of the seat at the point where the seating surface meets the back. Measure the depth of the seat by measuring from the top edge of the seating surface to the point where it meets with the back.

How to choose replacement cushions and covers

When buying new covers or cushions for your outdoor furniture you should always follow some guidelines. When you begin your search, you should consider the following:

Cushions are available for all collections.

We have a wide range of outdoor furniture and cushions to match. When you are looking for replacement cushions for rattan furniture, be sure to look by piece and collection. If you have the Portofino Signature Six-Piece Deep Seating Set, you should buy cushions designed to fit that furniture. So, you can be sure that your cushions will perfectly fit your furniture.

Try to match colors: Take into consideration the other pieces of furniture you have in your garden. What color is the hammock or patio umbrella, for example? Your new cushions (and therefore your furniture) should match the decor of your outdoor areas.

Think about accessories: When you buy new cushions, it’s a great opportunity to purchase accessories such as throw pillows. This will allow you to add color and comfort to your design. You can’t just buy any pillow. It has to be designed for outdoor use. We have lumbar pillows and throw pillows available in a variety of colors to suit your needs.

Get creative with patterns: You can get creative with patterns if you buy pillows along with your replacement cushions or covers. You could, for example, buy covers in a solid sand color and then accent your furniture using striped pillows.

How to care for and maintain your outdoor replacement cushions

Basic care can help to extend the life span of your outdoor cushions or outdoor cushion covers. Follow these simple steps:

    • Brush dirt and debris regularly. You can vacuum between the seats or corners.
    • Blot the fabric to remove stains, but do not rub.
    • Patio cushion colors will remain vibrant if you limit exposure to direct sun.
    • Place the seam-side of cushions that become wet with water down on drains.
    • The covers can be removed to clean and dry the cushion separately.
    • Clean and dry your cushions thoroughly before storing them during the winter or wet seasons.

Use covers for furniture in order to prolong the life of all your furniture. The best covers are those that are a little wider and deeper than the furniture. Covers should be slightly shorter than the height of your furniture to avoid attracting moisture from the ground. Replace your cushions to add some color and comfort while enjoying the outdoors.
