What better way to mark the dawn of a new year (and a new decade as well in this case) than injecting new life into the things around us. There’s no better place to begin a relook and reorder of things than your kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are the heart of the kitchen and essential to its character. It’s the fixture that most people will notice first when they walk into the space.

Given their huge visual impact therefore, cabinets provide one of the best opportunities to quickly transform the look and feel of the kitchen. Yet, there’s just so much you can do with cabinets that each multiple trends emerge that define the design and installation of cabinets. The following trends are ones to watch as we enter 2020.

1. Sustainability

Concerns around sustainability have permeated every aspect of human life. Many homeowners were already considering it a major factor in their choice of cabinet. We can expect this trend to gain substantial traction throughout the coming year.

Eco-friendly kitchens using upcycled and sustainable materials are on the rise with kitchen cabinets proving to be the low hanging fruit for quickly getting on the sustainability bandwagon. Expect to see sustainable cabinets made from the expected (such as recycled wood) and the unexpected (e.g. recycled PET bottles).

2. Gray

Light neutral hues are experiencing a strong resurgence in the kitchen. After homeowners dabbled in diverse colours in an effort to make the kitchen exciting, many eventually realized that it’s hard to beat grey as a kitchen colour theme.

While gray has always been popular with kitchen floors and walls, adding this neutral color to your kitchen cabinets introduces a new level of sophistication.

3. Dark Colors

This might seem like a bit of a contradiction to the previous point. On the contrary, the grey and dark colour trends for kitchen cabinets aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Both trends are expected to be prominent in kitchen remodelling in Los Angeles – Cabinet City Kitchen and Bath.

Deep dark colours including black can be tastefully dramatic especially when juxtaposed against the lighter hues dominating the rest of the kitchen. Of course, all black kitchens are popular and that’s unlikely to change in 2020.

4. Walnut

Walnut always comes across as rich, warm and perfectly coordinated in the context of a white, clean kitchen. It’s a wood that’s bound to dominate kitchen cabinet designs next year.

5. Multi-Tone

Your kitchen cabinets don’t necessarily have to have the same color. In any case, your kitchen is inevitably a space containing multiple colors. You can expand your design options by having two or more colors for your cabinets. You could for instance have one color for the wall cabinets and a different one for the kitchen counter or kitchen island cabinets.

As always, the colors must complement each other as well as the overall theme of the kitchen.

6. Island Cabinets

Kitchen islands establish extra seating and workspace in the room. But other than being a place you place various things on top of, how about harnessing the space below it? That’s right. 2020 will see homeowners explore new storage opportunities by installing kitchen island cabinets. Given the typical size of a kitchen island, we are talking a substantial increase in the available storage.

7. Soft Wood Tones

Wood cabinets have a timeless air and provide an appealing contrast to sleek appliances. Nevertheless, not all wood types are suitable for kitchen cabinets. The best woods such as oak and ash have warmer, softer tones that are a natural fit in the kitchen.

8. Hands-Free

It’s one of the more defining marks of the minimalist design movement. Handsfree cabinets are creating clean, regular lines on kitchen cabinets as we launch into the new decade. From touch-release to cutouts to hidden handles, invisible and barely-there hardware on your cabinets is certainly a trend to watch in 2020.

With cool new kitchen cabinet brands coming up and plenty of innovative cabinet designs hitting the market across the country, homes will be spoilt for choice in 2020.
